Should betting on other games be legalized?
Gambling on certain games like poker, baccarat, horse racing or bingo has been accepted as a tradition. The business has grown and yet, there is a standing malice against the occupation through societal repudiation. This keeps a sizeable number of people from heading there regularly. Familiarity breeds contempt.
However, if betting on other games like soccer and tennis be legalized, an unseen angle will open. Since this will be a new initiative, stigmatic effect will be that less and people will openly flout their habit of taking chances.
Also, for big money players, it becomes possible to buy off a couple of players for a day. Then, the sporting credibility of these games will lose. Hansie Cronje, cricket captain of RSA, stands to be a revolutionary example of how a single guy could stain a sport’s image. Yet, within limitations and with a ceiling budget, experimentation may be done to check the results.
2008 World Series of Poker saw not very high participation in the main event. Reason- gambling regulation authorities decided not to give Main Event seats to the internet gambling sites. Today, online poker has stepped into legal mire from where it might find difficult to redeem itself. Funnily, it is still going strong.
