Cards, as per the reports available, were invented by the Chinese after they invented sheets of paper in the ninth century. Europeans started playing cards around the 14th and the 15th century and this is when they created the court cards and the four suites which we all use very commonly today.

Most of the popular card games that we play today were found at this time only. Trick taking card games are also very popular and one of the earliest known of these is Ecarte which was played around the 19th century. Ecarte like many of the other card games of those times did not use all the 52 cards of the deck. Trick taking games like Euchre and Bridge are played all over the world today but not many people know the origins of these games.

The origin of the game can probably be attributed to various wheel games like Ace of Hearts and Roly-Poly. The word means small wheel in French. Present day roulette was first played in 1796 and in fact it has a mention in a French book of that age.

The French double-zero wheel arrived from New Orleans to the Mississippi shores and it marked the arrival of Roulette in the United States. In early times, Monte Carlo had a single zero wheel and Las Vegas had a double zero variant.

By the end of the seventh decade of last venture, casino games began to spread like fire and Roulette became quite a craze. Today, with the expansion of internet and online gambling, roulette is a game stamped with high-participation. US, Antilles and South America follow the double zero wheels.

Basically, the “poker” word has been derived from a very famous French game called “poque”.

During the initial stages, gold dust, gold nuggets and coins have been used as the basic units in the poker games during old times. After then, the poker chips started replacing poker coins due to the fact that they are relatively easy to manage. Usually the chips were composed of bone, paper, and ivory as its composition which made it strong and attractive.

Costly clay compositions were actually made in the United States by the year 1930. They are named as Seal & Crest whose composition consists of a lithograph finely embedded in the clay well blended with a liquid of poly-urethane type called as “Seal” into the whole surface.
